Thing #11

Some random thoughts on technology:
The promise of technology has always been higher efficiency, more accomplished in less time.
The reality of technology seems to me to be that it consumes huge amounts of our time and actually keeps us from being efficient and getting things done.
Yes - you can suddenly share what you are doing right this minute with a person half way across the world that you went to high school with and ate lunch with exactly 6 times in 4 years, but have you said good morning to your next door neighbor lately?
I accept the fact that I am an old fuddy-duddy and that community is drastically changing in the world, but I think we are losing something important when we give up touch and eye contact.
Don't get me wrong - I couldn't and wouldn't live without indoor plumbing, central heat and air, refrigeration, electrical appliances, computers, automobiles, and all the other uses of technology that make my life luxurious everyday.
I just want all of us to still talk, laugh and interact face to face, too.
Happy Thanksgiving! (You can see I'm behind again)
