Some random thoughts on technology:
The promise of technology has always been higher efficiency, more accomplished in less time.
The reality of technology seems to me to be that it consumes huge amounts of our time and actually keeps us from being efficient and getting things done.
Yes - you can suddenly share what you are doing right this minute with a person half way across the world that you went to high school with and ate lunch with exactly 6 times in 4 years, but have you said good morning to your next door neighbor lately?
I accept the fact that I am an old fuddy-duddy and that community is drastically changing in the world, but I think we are losing something important when we give up touch and eye contact.
Don't get me wrong - I couldn't and wouldn't live without indoor plumbing, central heat and air, refrigeration, electrical appliances, computers, automobiles, and all the other uses of technology that make my life luxurious everyday.
I just want all of us to still talk, laugh and interact face to face, too.
Happy Thanksgiving! (You can see I'm behind again)

Thing #9 Playing with Flickr
There are obviously a lot of talented people out there that never sleep or have way too much free time on their hands. I'm sure there are many practical apps for these manipulations, but obviously, I like the letters. In a former life, I think I was a printer!
Thing #8 Classic Venetian tourists!
This is John and me relaxing on the canals of Venice in June 2004. The gondolier did actually sing to us!

Thing #7 - Finding Feeds
It seems like it took me way too long to find feeds I was interested in - that's probably because I was trying to get this finished! The epicurious recipe feed should be fun, however.
Thing #6 RSS
RSS seems to be one of the simplest Things so far, but potentially one of the personally most useful. We'll see if I can find time to look at my feeds everyday!
Thing #5b
I finally got to successfully chat with Allana tonight! I really can see the worth of IMing, but I'm not sure how you get around all the different systems. Maybe I'll try Meebo and see how that goes.

Thing #5 IM
We three cats on Monday night
Trying hard to IM right
Sue gets on and finds me gone
Ebeth jumps in and no one is on
I think the program is fighting back
just to keep three cats off track
I'll try again when the sun does shine
And hope that I can IM just fine

Things 3 & 4
Getting started on the blog was a challenge for many of us @HPL because we wanted to follow lock step directions rather than play around and make mistakes. It was after I worked with the 3rd staff person that we finally figured out the html tagging to make the blog url a real link! Yeah!
Things 1 & 2
The easiest and the hardest of the 7 1/2 habits of highly successful lifelong learners is Habit 7: Teach/mentor others. It is easiest because I like to teach and watch others learn. It is hardest because it requires patience and accepting the reluctance of others to learn new things.
Gathering My Tribe
I am attempting to follow the blogs of all my staff. So far I have LG added. I found Bev, but can't seem to follow her. Something else to learn! That is what this is all about.
